Summary:Last summer's 'Star Trek' reboot was one of the most successful unions in recent Hollywood memory, as the blockbuster married modern sensibilities (courtesy of J. J. Abrams) with beloved fan favorites (the iconic figures of Kirk, Spock and Bones). So it's only fitting that the franchise has issued another staple of every successful wedding: a save the date card.
Yes, according to Cinematical, Paramount has served notice to the moviemaking world that 'Star Trek 2' will be landing in theaters on June 29, 2012. That date, of course, means that 'Star Trek 2' will be hitting screens just in time for the Fourth of July crowds, which in the past have turned other sci-fi films into out-of-this-world blockbusters (see: 'Independence Day' and 'Transformers'). undefinedLast summer's 'Star Trek' reboot was one of the most successful unions in recent Hollywood memory, as the blockbuster married modern sensibilities (courtesy of J. The announcement also suggests that the studio is confident the film will be ready by the summer of 2012, which isn't a given considering such minor details as the story and plot have yet to be worked out. Still, over the last few weeks, signs have been pointing to a summer 2012 release -- actress Zoe Saldana, for instance, who plays Uhura, indicated last month that she had been told production would begin on the film at the end of this year -- so the announcement isn't a huge surprise.
Whether or not 'Star Trek 2' can live up to expectations, however, remains to be seen, considering the film is likely to face strong competition. While it is still too early to know the full slate of 2012's summer blockbusters, one of the most anticipated films in recent memory, Marvel's 'The Avengers,' has already laid claim to a May 4 release date. While that movie, which will bring together the stars of Marvel's solo films (including 'Iron Man' and 2011's 'Thor' and 'Captain America'), is unlikely to be a factor by the time 'Star Trek' lands two months later, another comic book blockbuster, 'Wolverine 2,' is still searching for a weekend to call its own.
Of course, for most Trekkies, the film's biggest competition will always remain the original franchise, making the rumored decision to include classic villain Khan in the upcoming movie a particularly interesting one."The fun of where we are on the sequel is we could use some of what was done before in a new way," Abrams told Sci-Fi Wire recently. "But we haven't even figured out what we would use yet, so it's very early on."

Paramount is already planning a movie sequel to Star Trek. Both Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are back to pen the script of Star Trek 2. And they're quite thrilled by the task:
"With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We'll be ambitious about what we'll do."
Scriptwriter Roberto Orci appreciates how the film has been positively received by the public, and understands that they got more freedom for what to do in Star Trek 2 as a result:

"I think the major lesson we learned is that fans were willing to accept differences and surprises, provided that they were somehow echoes or inspired by canon. We still have to be true to Star Trek the next time around, but we've also been blessed with being able to be unpredictable. And that doesn't mean we can just be shocking for no good reason and just throw everything away. ... It still has to echo everything that Star Trek has been.
[...]
We have agreed to write another one. We're going to start thinking about it any second now. But we're still just having a mental sorbet before we jump back in. And, you know, just seeing all the reactions to the movie. We want to make sure we take it all in and really figure out what worked and what didn't and proceed from there. But now that we have... an open canvas, ... anything can happen."
